at the Liverpool International
Nordic Community
LiNC advances the Christian Religion amongst Scandinavians in Liverpool whether as residents, visitors or seafarers visiting the ports of the River Mersey. This is further extended to include visitors to the North West and North Wales.
The Church conducts regular acts of worship at the Gustaf Adolfs Kyrka in keeping with the Scandinavian Lutheran Church and provides for baptism, weddings and burial services in accordance with this tradition. There is also the opportunity for educational and cultural events and activities whilst within the Kyrka there is a library and exhibition space for Scandinavian artists and performers. To reaffirm the cultural identity of the five nations the national events of Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Denmark are celebrated as well as Festivals such as Paske, Jul, Midsommer and St Lucia.
Scandinavians in general have an excellent grasp of English this being normally their second language. However, for those from the local community in Liverpool who need to visit Scandinavia on business or for pleasure for an extended period language classes are given for both adults and their families.
In Scandinavia, food has always been important perhaps because of the harsh winter climate and the short cultivation period. In Liverpool this tradition is maintained with the promotion of individual national foods and with cookery lessons and coffee mornings being held for Scandinavian residents and visitors.
In conjunction with the local Liverpool community, outreach activities are held with the local primary schools to indicate the Scandinavian culture from Viking times to the present.
