I hope you all had a very good summer and enjoyed some holidays, but autumn is upon us now.  The Christmas fair, 1st of Advent and Lucia make November and December the busiest months of the year for us and I hope to see you at these events.

The Nordic Church 1883 Trust has had 2 meetings of its members, who are Robert Lee, Harriet Busby, Stan Royden, Roger Metcalf, Helen Metcalf, Bishop Jana Jeruma-Grinberga and Bishop Rupert Hoare. The ownership of the building and of the lease of the land, on which the church stands, is firmly within the control of this trust. We are in the process of setting out how the 1883 Trust and LiNC will work together managing all the activities that you have been attending and enjoying over the past few years, and at the same time looking after the building.

I can absolutely guarantee to you all that the future of the Gustaf Adolf Church is secure and under our own management.

As you know, the LiNC Charity is now the proud owner of the car park which we purchased from the Swedish Church for £97,500. The initial Car Park Appeal raised some £20,000 in a total of 53 donations, which necessitated a loan from the Charity Bank of £70,000, paid off over 7 years. The bank loan now stands at £40 000, after LiNC has paid some £30 000 back to the bank after one year.

It took some time to achieve, but we are now hiring out 10 of the 13 car park spaces on a Monday to Friday -daytime only- arrangement to local business individuals. This time restraint has been a problem, because people want to rent spaces for the full 24 hours 7 days a week. We have had to reduce our original charging prices with a result that the income for the 10 spaces is £600 per month. In order to reduce further the bank charges I am asking us all to take part in another LiNC Car Park Appeal with a view to achieving a £5000 total of further donations, particularly if you have not already donated.  Christmas is approaching, perhaps you could give a donation to our appeal as a different present to family and friends instead of doing the haunting task of finding presents in the shops?  Your generosity will be officially acknowledged by LiNC. Names of donors so far feature on the appeal page further on in the newsletter.

The church is secured and the car park now owned by LiNC. This enables us to look to the future and to start planning what activities we want to have in the building. We are continuing all the existing activities, but we also have the option for new exciting possibilities, so I ask for any ideas you might have. Please approach Stan or me, by email, phone or in church.

Many of you will now have seen the fully repaired basement from when the flood of water came in as our Christmas present. All the work has been carried out to the highest standards and paid for by the insurance company, which is recovering costs from the water company. There has been no cost to LiNC or church. As you might have seen, all the furniture has been replaced and new light-coloured flooring put down. In our opinion this has improved the basement facilities to a high standard and completely changed the atmosphere. Have a look at it when you come to the Christmas fair at the end of November, if not before! As usual it has been mainly Stan, Mette and Katrine who have had to put up with a lot of extra time and effort during the repairs. I would like to thank them and everyone inconvenienced for being so understanding during the repair work.

I am so enthusiastic about the repairs done that I am determined to have the front stair well redecorated from the basement to the church top.  There has been a long-lasting slow leak in the roof, which has been mended of course, but the ugly signs are still there. I am therefore looking for volunteers who can come and help in cleaning and painting the walls. I will do the areas that are difficult to reach, so volunteers can assume that they will be standing on the normal floor to wield their paint brushes. Contact me if you can help!

As always, we have had a varied and interesting set of activities taking place in the early part of the year as well as the normal church services. These have included choral recitals, Wednesday lunches, Swedish country dancing, film club, lectures, the Finnish school, other language courses among other things. This continues to show everyone that we are a thriving cultural and social community. But we do not always appreciate how much work is carried out by volunteers in the background to make events and activities happen.  I thank everyone who has been kind to help us throughout the year.

I must draw your attention to the costs of this newsletter. Each printed copy that we post to you at home costs us almost 90 pence. We send out 450 copies in the post. This is a cost that we want to reduce.  WE WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE A POSITIVE REPLY FROM YOURSELVES SAYING THAT YOU WISH TO CONTINUE RECEIVING THIS NEWS LETTER IN PRINTED AND POSTED FORMAT. There is a small form to fill to indicate your interest in still receiving it by post. Please send it to us.

If you do have an e-mail address, please inform us.  We will send the newsletter by email at no cost whatsoever. You will also be informed when a special or extra event is on at the church.   I suggest that you print out the programme pages for easy reference, it lasts up to April.

We continue to look towards long term aims, particularly the installation of a much needed lift, but that is going to require significant contributions from grants and other funding possibilities. We are always searching for these.

So all in all, we continue to work successfully and have lots of activities taking place. I hope that more of you would like to come in and take part. You can also, of course, volunteer to take an active part in the work that we do to bring all the activities to you.

We are secure in our Gustaf Adolf Church. We need you all to spread the word about our LiNC charity and a challenge from me is to ask all of you to get at least one new member each to join us! We do need your FINANCIAL HELP and support in donations and keeping up to date with your membership fees in order that we can plan all the activities for the year and pay for the running costs and maintenance work that is required on the building.

May I remind LiNC members that the AGM of the charity will take place at the church on

6 November. Elections of committee members and approval of our finances are on the agenda.

Thank you for your support and I am looking forward to seeing you in the church.

Roger Metcalf.
